Anticipation

Brady is getting steadier and more confident in his walking. Look how effortlessly he cruises around with toys in hand...

He can also stand still in the middle of the room...

We love that Brady is confident and now prefers to walk everywhere. The only problem is that he has to concentrate solely on walking or will take a nasty fall which is a whole lot different when you are in the parking lot at Target versus at home on the cushy carpet! At our IEP meeting we noticed that the floors were vinyl or thin, commercial-grade carpet with no padding. It's hard to imagine how things will go when one of us isn't hovering and ready to catch Brady. His defensive reflexes have improved tremendously, but it's the unexpected stuff like tripping on something he hasn't anticipated or attempting to lean on kids who might move out of the way at the last second that is causing most of Brady's falls.

In our IEP we agreed to purchase a helmet for Brady to use while on the playground. I guess we will just see how things go while he is indoors at school. He has been known to fall off chairs unexpectedly so we have been practicing for school...

I have never been so excited and nervous about something as I am about Brady going to school. I can't wait to meet his teacher and I am thrilled that Troy will get a break for a few hours each day. I guess the hard part for me is that I can't ask Brady about his day. Do you think they will let me peek through the windows for the first few weeks? Hmmm... didn't think so.

Go, Brady, Go! How wonderful with the walking stuff!

And how exciting, starting school. I know when EK started, we had written into her IEP that she had to have an adult right next to her the entire time she was on the playground, for those unexpected falls and tips and trips. By the end of the year, she didn't need the help hardly at all.

In regards to asking him about his day... when EK started, her teachers were very receptive to our request that they write in a 'communications log' each day that came home in her backpack. They would write down what songs they sang at circle time, what stations she went to during play time, who she played with, etc. It was so much easier to ask her "Did you sing the piggy song at school" and get a smile/nod/yes response than asking her what she did at school and getting no response at all. She can answer yes/no questions, so if we asked the right ones, we got a conversation going!

Good luck! Can't wait to hear how he adapts to school!

That is so cool that Brady is walking around. Of course, the blessing is its own curse. Once they are mobile...they are mobile.

Misha has been walking for about a year, but he still is a bit wobbly and clumsy. He may need an adult at recess just to watch him. He has started climbing on things...even when he is going to get stuck.

I will have to remember the comm log that bella wrote about so I can know what he did and ask about it.

How exciting! Brady really gives us hope for our little Alayna when she is 3! He is walking so good and sitting up so big. I never thought about it before, but a helmet is a good idea so he doesn't get hurt. Alayna has one of course for her plagiocephaly and she tolerates it well. She enjoys hearing the sounds of toys hitting it. It's been good to protect her while we help her sit and occassionally we let go and let her fall backwards. We are trying to get her defensive reflexes to kick in. Keep us posted how school goes and it looks to me like he will do great. He is so cute and I'll bet the new teacher and kids will love him.
